In atrocity cases bail denial must, Women’s panel

Mangaluru, Mar 31, 2017: Speaking after inaugurating Saagarakanya 2017, an International Women’s Day programme, organised by Fisheries College, Ekkur, Mangaluru, on March 30, Thursday.  Karnataka State Women’s Commission chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai said the commission has written a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to bring an amendment to the law which denies bail to the culprits in atrocity cases.

Those who are convicted in women atrocity cases come out of the jail on bail. This prevents them from correction and  regret to the acts they have committed. The culprits in atrocity cases should not be encouraged thus, she said.

Today’s women should are self-reliant economically. Women are subject to inhumane acts. Women’s problems are on rise in places like Kalaburagi, Mandya and Belgaum in North Karnataka with female foeticide, women trafficking and forced prostitution being the serious issues. she said.

According to a UNESCO report, a woman is raped every three minutes in India, there is a dowry-related death  every 15 minutes, a woman is forced to prostitution every 15 minutes, a female foeticide every 20 minutes and a murder of woman every 30 minutes, she said.

Dr H Shivananda Murthy, registrar, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, Asian Fisheries Society Indian branch secretary Dr B A Shamsundar, Fisheries College dean Dr M N Venugopal, women and child development deputy director Sundar Poojary and Fisheries College Women’s Grievance Redressal Committee chairperson Dr Mrudula Rajesh were present.
