Udupi, Dec 25, 2014: Over 50 kg of beef and nearly 5 kg of sandalwood pieces which were being illegally transported in a Maruti Omni van were seized by the Kota Police near the Kota Mahalingeshwara Temple on December 25, Thursday. Though the people in the Omni gave the cops a slip, a person named Abdul who had reportedly come to purchase beef from the accused has been arrested.
It has been gathered that the beef was being transported to Udupi from Kadlur. The operation followed a tip off from the activist of a right wing organisation who grew suspicious on seeing the Omni and a person who arrived there in a two-wheeler reportedly to purchase beef.
Sources said two men in the vehicle fled while Abdul who had come to purchase beef was arrested. Police said the sandalwood blocks were hidden under the beef in a storage compartment of the vehicle.
The Kota police are on the lookout for the two accused who have escaped.
