Ill effects of tobacco, clay art display, Udupi meet

Udupi, June 01, 2018: Udupi Additional Deputy Commissioner G Anuradha unveiled a clay art installation depicting the ill effects of tobacco in the city.

She termed the attempt as an effective and excellentway to deliver the message.

She said that more than words, the artifacts effectively reach the targeted people as art pieces deliver more than words. The clay art models on heart, lungs and heart-related diseases have more impact, she said.

The programme was organised to mark World No Tobacoo Day at the Ajajrkadu district hospital.

Habits root cause of bad, Judge:

District and Sessions Judge, Udupi,  Justice Venkatesh Naik said that bad habits are the root cause of illegal activities in the society.

After inaugurating the World Anti-Tobacco Day programme organised by the district administration, zilla panchayat, district police department, and district health and family welfare department, here on Thursday, the magistrate opined that the increase in criminal activities in the society is due to the offender being addicted to some bad habits.

Addictions are very harmful. Addictions such as alcohol and smoking have led to an increase in the number of criminal activities. The person who is addicted cannot control himself and crime takes place when he finds himself in helpless situations. He said that the second major cause of death is smoking in the world. Smoking leads to breathing issues, heart attack and cancer kind of serious health interventions. He said that the awareness programme on ill effects of smoking should be extensively held and youths should be sensitised. He called for creativity among people and said that good hobbies keeps humans engaged.

“He or she should not be a victim of bad addictions,” he reiterated.

District Surveillance Officer Dr Vasudev said that awareness programmes on bad effects of smoking are held in all schools in the district. Smoking is banned in public places and also in and around educational institutions. As many as five teams are made to frequently raid such places and ensure that there are no violations.

“A de-addiction centre is opened in the district hospital, where the patients are treated with nicotine therapy. Measures are taken to control the use of tobacco in the district,” he added.
