Home minister meets victim of police torture

Mangalore, Jul 29: Home Minister V. S. Acharya visited AJ Hospital to get first-hand information regarding the condition of Shivaram Shetty on July 29, Thursday. Mr. Shetty was brought to AJ Hospital in a critical condition and was immediately placed in the hospital’s intensive care unit. He was beaten up with a rod and given 3rd degree tortue by the Bantwal police three days ago.

Police sources reveal that Shivaram Shetty was arrested with regard to the death of a farm house servant of Nagaraj Shetty, the Coastal Development Authority. Superintendent of Police Dr. A. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao said that strict action has been taken against the police officers who tortured Mr. Shetty and that he intends to speak to the IGP about it. Three police officers have already been suspended with regard to the case.

The home minister met the family members of Mr. Shetty and assured them that the government will bear his medical expenses.
