Helpline to assist girl students in times of distress : Sasikanth Senthil

Mangaluru, July 08, 2019: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has informed that a  helpline would be started to assist  female students  in times of distress.

He was addressing a meeting of  representatives of various educational institutions, hostels and voluntary organisations convened by the District Administration on July 8, Monday  with the objective of sensitizing the educational institutions on the need to check instances of sexual abuse of girl students.

The DC said  the  helpline  number 1077 which is presently operating to assist citizens in times of distress would be utilised  to receive  complaints regarding  any instance of  abuse of students or matters pertaining to safety of students. Later efforts would be made to solve the issue  after consulting experts. Schools too should appoint counsellors and  try to create an awareness among students. There is need for active participation of everyone to check such instances, he opined.

Representatives of educational institutions who participated in the meeting  opined that mobile phones should be banned in school premises and   minors should not be allowed to enter bars  and pubs. Several other suggestions also came up.

Psychiatrist Dr Ravish Tunga who spoke on the occasion said there was a need  for a change in attitude to put an end to such instances.

DCP Hanumantharaya said all steps would be taken to check  menace of drugs and sought the co-operation of students, parents, educational institutions and public in this regard.
