Mangaluru, April 22, 2015: Heavy rain accompanied by strong wind, thunder and lightning which lashed various parts of Dakshina Kannada district, while providing reprieve from the soaring mercury levels, also caused damage in some places. Meanwhile, a young woman from Sajipamooda village in Bantwal who had been to her sister’s place at Savanoor in Puttur taluk was killed in a lightning strike.
The deceased woman is Rasheeda (29) wife of Basheer.It is learnt, Rasheeda was inside her sister’s house when she was struck by lightning resulting in critical burn injuries. Though she was rushed to hospital immediately her life could not be saved. Rasheeda has left behind her husband, two sons and a daughter.
Meanwhile, lightning also killed a cow at Kanchimaru in Dharmasthala village on April 21, Tuesday night. It has been gathered that cows in the cattle shed had fled helter skelter due to panic. A person named Prabhaker (37) who resided nearby too was injured in lightning strike.
In Mangaluru, heavy winds uprooted a coconut tree which rolled over the house of Dayananda near Monkeystand in Mangaladevi damaging the house.
Electricity and telephone connections were also disrupted at several places owing to rain and strong winds.
