Heavy rain claims 3 lives in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, July 8, 2018: Heavy rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district on Sunday as well. In the last 24 hours (ending 8 am on Saturday), Dakshina Kannada district received an average of 175.8 mm rainfall. Bantwal received highest of 202.3 mm rain followed by 198.5 mm, Puttur—188.3 mm, Belthangady—184.6 mm, and Mangaluru—105.4 mm. Udupi taluk received 197.6 mm rain, Kundapur taluk — 118.5 mm rain and Karkala — 196.9 mm rain.
An elderly woman and her grandson were killed when a compound wall fell following heavy rain, on a house at Hebbarabail in Puttur on Saturday. The deceased are Parvathi (65) and her grandson Dhanush (12). The compound wall belongs to Bharathi Bhat.
As the compound wall fell on the house, the roof and the wall of the house fell on the duo, killing them on the spot. A loss of Rs 10 lakh to 12 lakh has been incurred by the house owner, according to a complaint filed in Puttur police station.
Another woman died when she accidentally fell into overflowing well at Ananthadi in Sudekattemar in Vittal.
The deceased is Kamala (60). The water in the well had entered the courtyard of the house. When she went to draw water from the well, she accidentally slipped and fell and died.
Puttur AC H K Krishnamurthy said that a compensation of Rs 10 lakh would be paid to the family of the deceased. In addition, relief for the damage to the house will also be paid.
Holiday for schools: The rain fury has forced the authorities in Belthangady, Sullia, Puttur and Moodibdri to declare a holiday for schools.
With increase in water-level in rivers and rivulets, the water level in river Nethravathi had reached 23.5 metre in Uppinangady as against the maximum level of 28 metre.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration has deployed three swimmers, five Home Guards, village accountants and a revenue inspector at Uppinangady Temple beside river Nethravathi.
Rescued: With the river Nandini river overflowing, 18 members from five families were rescued by fire service personnel using boats, at Soorinje in Surathkal. The water had entered inside their houses and inmates were sitting on the roof of their houses till the rescue team reached the spot.
A landslide has occurred on the banks of river Nethravathi at Thumbe vented dam. The water level in Thumbe vented dam has reached seven metres and all the gates of the dam have been opened. Temporary works have been taken up on the area where landslide near the dam.
Roads inundated: A temporary road constructed to connect Moolarapatna hanging bridge was inundated, thus causing schoolchildren and villagers. In fact, the water level has reached above knee level on the road.
The compound wall of Government School in Gandhinagara, Central Library at Light House hill collapsed following incessant rain in Mangaluru.
The low-lying areas in Mangaluru were inundated. Vehicles wading through flooded road was a common sight in the low-lying areas.
The roads in Vittal were flooded and affected the movement of vehicles.
With the water flowing on Vittal-Salethoor-Mangaluru road at Kudthamugeri, the movement of vehicles was disrupted for sometime. Water has entered into houses and farm land at Karai in Kolnadu, Kodangai in Vitla Padnoor. Water has also entered inside Kapumajalu Temple, masjid at Moorukaje in Vittal.
On the other hand, uprooting of trees, landslides on the nine-kilometre stretch from Majjoni-Kodapadavu-Karai on Vittal-B C Road-Mangaluru disrupted the movement of vehicles till noon.
Landslide at Mithoor on Mani-Mysuru highway affected the movement of vehicles for a few hours. A house was completely damaged when a hillock caved in on the house following rain at Veerakambha in Vittal. The house belongs to Dinesh S.
A house belonging to Maji Rama Bhat was partially damaged following a landslide, at Thalithanooji.
With the rivers Nandini and Shambhavi rivers in spate, the low-lying areas in Kinnigoli, Pakshikere Panja, Kilenjoor, Malligeyangady, Kodethooru and Kateel were inundated.
A road connecting Athoorubail Ganapathi Mandira was submerged in water. The road connecting Mugerubail in Balkunje is inundated. If water-level continues to rise, then more than 15 houses in the vicinity will remain cut off from the mainland.
Shambhavi river is overflowing at Balkunje, Aikala gram panchayat and low-lying areas of Kariyathalagundi, Ulepady, Patte Cross have been flooded.
The boats that were anchored at Mattu have capsized. People and vehicles faced inconvenience with the water flowing on the Mulki-Manampady stretch. Water has entered houses in Manampady, Kakwa, Kokrani, Athikari Bettu, Molottu and Mattu and the vehicles parked outside the houses have been inundated.
Hosamata bridge: The Hosamata bridge across Gundya river on Uppinangady-Kadaba-Subrahmanya state highway submerged in water and disrupted the movement of vehicles on the stretch for five hours.
About 6-foot water flowed on the road since Friday night. The water level receded by Saturday noon. Chelyadka bridge on Panaje in Puttur was inundated following heavy rain.
Bathing ghat: The snanaghatta (Bathing ghat) at Kukke Subrahmanya temple was inundated following the increase in water level in river Kumaradhara till evening.
Even the toilets constructed near Snanaghatta were also inundated and inconvenienced the devotees. The old bridge across Kumaradhara connecting Kukke Subrahamanya has been submerged. Darpanatheertha river, the tributary of Kumaradhara, is also overflowing in the region and water from the river has entered agricultural land in and around Subrahmanya.
In Udupi, houses damaged, people shifted.
Heavy rain lashed Udupi district on Saturday. The low-lying areas have submerged on both sides of Nittur and Karavali Junction. As rainwater had entered inside the houses, about 60 to 70 people were shifted to safer areas. Schools and colleges in some remote areas had declared holidays.
Waterlogging of roads inconvenienced both pedestrians and residents. The waterlogging of Madhwaraj Layout in Kodankoor affected the residents. About 70 people were shifted with the help of Malpe fishermen.
Rajangann: Water has entered Rajangann on Sri Krishna Mutt premises. As a result, several vehicles were inundated. Over 100 houses near Vidyodaya School, Matadabettu, Badagubettu and Bannanje experienced artificial floods.
Rivers Seetha, Swarna, Varahi and Sauparnika are all in spate.
MLA Raghupathy Bhat rushed to the flood affected areas in Nittur and helped in the rescue operation. A gruel centre has been opened at Beedanagudde for the benefit of citizens, said the legislator.
Water on highway: The stretch at the Kalsanka bridge near the under-construction national highway in Padubidri was blocked for nearly two hours as the rainwater submerged the low-lying areas, thus flooding the road. All the vehicles from Mangaluru to Udupi were diverted to the route via Belmannu.
Riverwater entered farm land in Kodangala. Also, a huge tree fell on a bridge at Kodangala and disrupted traffic for some time.
Water has entered over 100 acre farm lands in Puthige, Pernankila, Parika, Bhairampalli, Bellarpady, Hirebettu, Balkatta areas. Artificial flood in Alevoor affected the vehicle users. Water entered a few shops as well.
In Karkala taluk, areas like Inna and Sooda are flooded. The Revenue Department officials immediately rushed to the spot to ensure safety measures.
Houses damaged: In Udupi district, a house belonging to Shekhar Poojary in Udyavara was completely damaged. The loss is estimated to be around Rs two lakh. A house in Kodasarabettu was damaged due to heavy gusty wind and the loss is estimated to be around Rs 40000. A house belonging to Janaki Belchada in Muduthonse was damaged after the walls fell owing to heavy rain. The loss is Rs 35,000.
In Kundapur, three houses were damaged in Kasaba village. The houses belonging to Puroshattham Naik, Harsha Kharvi and Panduranga Kharvi was damaged severely. The losses are estimated to be around Rs 40,000 each.
In Woderhobli, a house belonging to Bacchi Poojary was damaged and the loss is Rs 50,000.
