Heavy Rain expected for next five days in Coastal Karnataka, Disaster management unit issues warning

Mangalore, June 12, 2015: Disaster Management Department has issued high alert following heavy rain forecast for next five successive days on the Karnataka Coastal districts by Meteorological department.

The Meteorological Department on Friday has said that heavy rain expected in the all three coastal districts of Karnataka, north part of Kerala, Goa coast and Konkan region for next five days.

 

Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at most places in Karnataka on Friday, the Met Office said.  The meteorological department issued a squall warning and cautioned fishermen to stay off the sea as strong winds from the southwesterly direction are likely to blow at speeds of 45 to 55 km per hour along Karnataka coast.

The revenue departments issued special instructions to three coastal districts to take all precautions and depression on the west coast towards Oman following the cyclonic storm ashoba over the north west of Arabian sea remained practically stationary during past three hours weakend in to a deep depression and lay hours centred near about 90 km east - north east of Gulf of Masirah off the east coast of Oman.

The IMD issued advice for hoisting storm warning signals by replacing the present signal with distant cautionary signal Number One in sea ports.

The next five days are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into the remaining parts of north Karnataka. There was heavy rainfall on Thursday in several places of Bantwal (13 cm), Mani (8) and Dharmasthala (7), officials added.

Other places which recorded heavy downpour are Karwar (19 cm), Ankola (12 cm), and Manki (10 cm) in Uttara Kannada district.
