Health care in doldrums with shortage of nurses

Udupi, May 13, 2016: Among reports available, Manipal College of Nursing and Manipal School of Nursing, jointly conducted weeklong activities to celebrate the  ’International Nurses Day, May 12’. This year’s theme : “Nurses: A force for change: Improving health systems’ resilience.”

Addressing the students, Ajitha P.S., Chief Nursing Officer at Premium Healthcare, Kozhikode, who was the chief guest, said young nurses had greater resilience.  She also said the government’s inability to address the problem of shortage of nurses would affect the quality of healthcare. Nurses needs to introspect and realise how they could be. The present healthcare workforce demands nurses to be more logical, resilient and they should also be able to rise above unhealthy situations to make the profession move  forward beter.

In her address, Anice George, Dean of Manipal College of Nursing, said values of commitment, loyalty, integrity, humane touch and teamwork were essential for every nurse in the profession. “If nurses are loyal towards their organisation, the performance of the organisation will be of high standard,” she said.

Students and faculty of the college participated in events such as quiz on May 6, mime competition on May 9, extempore speech on May 10 and a seminar yesterday may 12,Thursday.

The various themes for the seminar were in line with the theme of International Council of Nurses. The speakers were Judith Noronha, Associate Dean of Manipal College of Nursing who spoke on “Improving organization resilience by quality nursing education.”

A talk on “Quality impact - Role of a nurse administrator” was delivered by Kasturi R. Adiga, Principal School of Nursing, Manipal, while Christopher Sudhakar, Dean of Manipal School of Nursing, Mangaluru, spoke on “Accreditation: force for change in 21st Century.”
