Having a great attitude is one of the keys to being successful: says Dr Ramnarayan

Manipal: September 28, 2015: Every learning assesses the head, hand and the heart, which symbolises knowledge, skills and attitude of students. But how much of the attitude in a learner or student is being assessed,” was the question posed by K. Ramnarayan, vice-president, Faculty Development and Alumni relations, Manipal University.
He was speaking at the Curriculum Convention organised by the Manipal College of Nursing, here recently.
Dr. Ramnarayan said, “Attitude is one pillar on which an individual stands in his or her profession lifelong. Students are like undifferentiated stem cells. They identify the interest areas themselves and look into what impresses them and follow their path to success. Today we keep adding new information, but deleting simultaneously is of paramount importance.”
He said, “If you add 10 per cent, delete 20 per cent accepting the limits of human understanding. Otherwise the curriculum may land up in ‘instructional elephantiasis’, a condition exhausted with contents. No human can remember the whole of information, instead we need to learn to manage information and not master information.”
Ramachandra, Head of Nursing, NIMHANS, Bengaluru, said, “Curriculum convention is the need of the hour in moulding every student’s destiny as a true professional.”
Nursing demanded a vast representative of knowledge, skills, presence of mind and critical analysis. These aspects needed to be handled while formulating nursing curriculum and practice across the country uniformly keeping nursing practice procedures and standards in place, he said.
Shirley David, Professor, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore, said, “Nursing curriculum is to be made more student-teacher friendly, ultimately making it a patient friendly profession.”
Anice George, Dean and Director of Nursing, Manipal University, spoke about the current scenario in nursing curriculum which needed to be kept abreast with the changing trends nationally and internationally.
The objectives for the brainstorming sessions were to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the existing B.Sc. nursing curriculum, obtain innovative suggestions in order to modify the present curriculum and to evolve an institutional curriculum by incorporating suitable suggestions from these sessions.
Group discussion and presentation on dream curriculum and innovative curriculum brought about suggestions including subject placement changes, depth of learning, innovative teaching-learning methods, creative assessment methods, among others.
