Mangaluru, Mar 11, 2016: Senior Congress Corporator representing Marakada ward has been elected the new Mayor of Mangaluru in the elections held at Mangaluru City Corporation meeting hall on March 11, Friday. Sumitra Kariya of the BJP was chosen the Deputy Mayor.
If the Mayoral post was reserved for a general category candidate, the Deputy Mayor’s post was reserved for a SC/ST lady candidate and the Congress had no candidate belonging to this category, the post eventually going to Sumitra Kariya of the BJP who represents Suratkal ward. The new Mayor Harinath has won the civic election five times since 1984.
The BJP had fielded Roopa D Bangera for the Mayoral post. She secured 20 votes as against 36 votes won by Harinath.
The MCC has a total of 60 corporators including 35 from Congress and 20 from BJP. The JD(S) has two candidates while CPI(M) and SDPI has two members. There is also an independent candidate in MCC.
Including local MLAs and MLCs, there were a total of 65 voters of whom 62 were present. All 60 corporators were present while among MLAs JR Lobo was present.
A M Kunjappa was the returning officer. Dr H N Gopalakrishna, MCC Commissioner and K M Gayatri, Additional Commissioner were present.
