In his inaugural address, he said that people hardly have the time to listen to the keerthanas composed by the dasas after the advent of the TV. Since most people prefer watching crime news on TV, the crime rate has risen, he opined.

Speaking about the various cultural changes experienced in India, he said that the elderly preferred to live with their children and grandchildren in the past, but now they prefer living in old age homes because there is nobody to speak at home.

He said that the purpose of the event is to encourage those who appreciate dasa sahitya and to create awareness regarding dasa sahitya among young people.

Delivering the key note address, Dr. H. S. Venkateshmurthy, the senior poet, said that the critics never considered vacahana sahitya and haridasa sahitya as “literature,” adding that it has been recently given the status of “literature.”

He said that programmes such as the sahitya sammelana should be organized because they will enhance the status of Kannada literature. Speaking about dasa sahitya, he said that Kanaka Dasa and Purandara Dasa wrote thousands of keerthana, but critics say that others wrote these keerthanas in their name to popularize them. He spoke of the need to start a literature research committee to study dasa sahitya in a scientific manner.

Shri Vidyateertha Swamiji of Subramanya Mutt released “Katha Keerthana,” a monthly newspaper.

Dr. Nallooru Prasad R. K., the president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad in Bangalore, presided over the event.

MCC Commissioner Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash; Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, the president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad; and Janardhan Hande were also present on the dais.
