Green flag for toy train at Kadri Park soon

Mangaluru, Oct 30, 2015 : Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director Sundar Poojary said, reintroducing the toy train at Kadri Park has received a fillip, with the Karnataka State Bal Bhavan Society releasing Rs 37 lakh. The officials from Railway Workshop in Mysuru visited Kadri Park and inspected the track and the area last week. The Joint Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department will soon inspect. The work on the proposal has been speeded up.

After stopping the train service in 2013, the Women and Child Welfare Department had submitted a proposal to South-western Railways at Hubballi, which, in turn, approved the proposal and forwarded the proposal to the Railway Workshop at Mysuru.

The workshop will prepare models of the train and submit to the Bal Bhavan Society, which will be reviewed by a committee headed by the Zilla Panchayat CEO. Once the model of the train is approved, and 10 per cent of the estimated cost paid in advance, the work on the train will go ahead. Models of the train are expected shortly. It would take at least six months for the work.

The track had remained unused for long  which needs repairs, estimates may be over 50 lakh,  The Women and Child Welfare Department has written to the Bal Bhavan Society seeking additional funds.  The toy train will have four bogies and will run on diesel. The train can accommodate 40 persons, including adults.  The engine of the previous toy train was manufactured in 1979 and used in the Bengaluru Bal Bhavan. It was in 1989 that its service was came to Mangaluru. The track was laid by the Southern Railways. Initially, it was the Mangaluru City Corporation that maintained the train.
