Govt.vehicles and designated transport must install GPS - deadlines set

Mangalore, Aug 1, 2014:  Chairing a meeting at his office July 31, DK Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that it has been made mandatory to install Global Positioning System (GPS) in government buses and vehicles that are used for distributing food and civil supplies. A deadline of August 30 is set earlier for installing GPS in sand transportation vehicles, the district administration has set a deadline of September end for installing GPS in government buses and vehicles that supply ration, kerosene and milk.

The vehicles should install GPS before the deadline. When an official from KSRTC said that the department has taken steps to install GPS to long distance and express buses, the Deputy Commissioner said that it was more important to install GPS to KSRTC buses that ply in rural areas. There have been complaints and this needs controls.
 


Canara Bus Owners’ Association President Rajaverma Ballal said that GPS was installed in service buses in the past, on apilot basis at a cost of Rs 17 lakh, and was of little use. Explaining about GPS, NITK Students’ Welfare Officer M Prasadnath said that the instrument helps to keep a reliable track where the vehicle travelled at a particular time and what was its speed. A display, a computer enabled with GPS tracking system is required for monitoring the vehicle. A sim card is needed for every GPS equipment. 


The GPS kit is not that expensive and one can purchase a quality kit for Rs 10,000.  District Mines and Geology Department Deputy Director (In-Charge) Nagendrappa said that GPS was installed in 3,450 lorries used for sand transportation, since 2010,  but presently it is seen  to exist in 319 vehicles, such is the will to maintain and operate properly.
