Mangaluru: August 24, 2015: The department of health and family welfare will take steps to construct district Ayush hospitals in Mangaluru and Gadag at a cost of Rs 10.5 crore each.

U T KhaderThe state government has already made budgetary provision for these 50-bed hospitals and funds will be released soon, said minister for health and family welfare U T Khader. The district Ayush hospital in the city will come up on the premises of the district government Wenlock Hospital, he said.

Inaugurating the Yenepoya Ayush Centre here on Saturday, Khader said his department is keen on making Ayush system of medicine the first option for patien

s and not the last choice of treatment as is the case now. "Ayush has a system of helping individuals combat diseases by gradually building up their immunity, unlike homeopathy, which takes care of the viruses and bacteria that invade the body," he said, adding that urban people are more likely to accept Ayush.

Noting that every system of medicine, be it ayurveda, unani or sidda or homeopathy have their own values, Khader said they more often than not complement allopathic system of medicine. "It will be beneficial for patients if all these systems of medicine work around each other," he said, adding that people in rural areas, who more often than not need to work to earn their square meal each day could prefer the allopathic medicine so that they are up and running without delay.

"Our enquiries have revealed that sidda system of medicine is being taught mostly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala," the minister said. Khader also added that it will not be prudent for the department to rush into introducing this system of medicine without getting the requisite number of qualified practitioners.
