He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Home here.

Pointing out that there were organised rackets engaged in trafficking of children, he called for stepped-up efforts to rescue children and women in distress.

Shobha Karandlaje, MP, said since there was no Observation Home in Udupi, the children in distress were being sent to the Home in Shivamogga.

Stating that display of violence and crime on television and social media had a negative impact on children, she said channels should take precautions while telecasting such clippings.

Many children below the age of 18 were now committing crime, and “it is my personal opinion that children above 14 or 16 years should be treated as adults”, she said.
