Govt must concentrate on higher education in State

Mangaluru, July 22, 2015: Physician Dr Srinivas Kakkillaya,  speaking after inaugurating a workshop on Second PU Kannada syllabus, for the Kannada lecturers, organised jointly by ‘Padaka,’ PU Kannada lecturers association and DK district PU College Principals Association at Ganapathy PU College in Mangaluru July 21, stating that the support given by the government towards education is insufficient, he lamented that the grants given by the government to the education sector is decreasing every passing year.

He meanwhile urged the State government to concentrate on implementing Kannada language as the medium of instruction at the primary-level and added that children’s knowledge develops when they attain primary education in their mother tongue.   This will give them clarity of thought and expression.

Dr Kakkillaya said that maximum number of students who take second PU examinations, write the exams in Kannada, which shows that the language still holds relevance in terms of primary education.

There are several loopholes in the teaching methods of languages, which needs to be addressed. The language teachers are not only required to be prolific in their subject but must also read major literary works in the respective languages.  

This will help them to develop good teaching aptitude. In these days when the seats from KG classes to PG classes are ’sold’, the quality of education is questionable, he pointed out.
