Goldsmith stages fake robbery, complains, police arrest him

Mangaluru, Mar 27, 2018: A goldsmith who feigned his own robbery and later committed theft in his residence to overcome loss in business was arrested by the Ullal Police on March 26, Monday.

gold 2The police in a communiqué here said that Harish Achari, resident of Kanakamugeru in Kinya, lodged a complaint with the South Police on March 21 stating that unknown miscreants robbed him of 54 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs. 1.35 lakh after throwing chilly powder into his eyes near Mahakalipadpu. The incident, Achari told the police, occurred when he was on his way to hand over the jewellery to Haji Gold at Thokkottu after crafting it at a workshop on Car Street.

Two days later, he lodged a house break-in and theft case with the Ullal Police stating that unknown miscreants had entered his house and decamped with jewellery worth Rs. 1 lakh belonging to his in-laws. The in-laws were visiting him after hearing about the robbery.

Upon investigation, the Ullal Police found that the doors of his residence were intact. After some questioning, the police said, Achari revealed that he only had committed the theft. The jeweller also admitted that he enacted the “robbery” the other day as he had suffered loss in business. The police also found out that he had bought chilly powder from a shop on Car Street.

Ullal Police Inspector K. Gopikrishna said that the accused must have committed the second offence after gaining some confidence following the first one.

The anti-rowdy squad headed by Mangaluru South Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Rama Rao conducted the probe.
