Gold bars worth over Rs 34 lakh seized from Mangaluru airport toilet

gold bars seizedMangaluru, Nov 5, 2017: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers on Nov 3, Friday recovered 10 gold bars of foreign origin valued at Rs 34.17 lakh from the toilets located next to the immigration area of Mangaluru International Airport (MIA).

The lead that DRI sleuths got indicated that a passenger on board the Spicejet Flight No.SG60 from Dubai had dropped the gold at the toilet for collection by some nsiders.

Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI, Mangaluru said that the identity of the passenger is not yet clearly known. Acting on the tip-off, officers of DRI rushed to the airport immediately and conducted a thorough search of the toilets next to immigration area. During the search, a small packet containing 10 gold bars wrapped in black insulation tapes was recovered.

The total weight of the gold bars is 1.166kg and the total market value of these bars is Rs 34.17 lakh. Bhat said further investigation in the case is under progress to identify and nab the culprit.
