Mangaluru, July 26, 2016: It is reported that students were wowed and looked closely at a range of wooden spoons displayed at the auditorium of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, which were similar to the stainless steel ones seen. Also curious was  a spoon made of bamboo stick and coconut shell.


Roshni Nilaya Many admirers of the day-long exhibition of kitchen and articles of antique value held at School of Social Work on July 25, Monday. The exhibition was organised by the Literary Circle comprising students and staff of English and Kannada departments.

The  Head of the Department of English, said that the intention of holding the exhibition was to make students aware of the rich culture and practices of the region. “We are displaying old articles and make students talk about it.” Apart from display of articles, students were served with snacks namely ‘patrode’ and other dishes made during the monsoon season.

A good number of articles that included big vessels used for heating water, idli stand and a container used to stock toddy. “Some of these articles used in 1950’s by my grandfather, who had a restaurant,” she said. Apart from kitchen articles, Ms. Shobhana, a native of Chennai, exhibited her ‘veena’. The former Professor of Sociology,  exhibited a cradle made of copper and wood. She had also brought old copper lamps, copper containers and jugs.

Students also had brought some of the articles from their houses. II year B.A student had brought kersone lamps and a set of puja articles made of copper. A I year B.A. student had exhibited a basket and other old bamboo products. Old swords, ‘eelige mane’ and other small kitchen articles too were displayed.
