Mangaluru, June 28, 2018: Mangaluru City Corporation has warned Antony Waste Handling Company which is entrusted with the task of garbage collection in the city, that it would cancel its contract in case of any instance of striking work in the future on the pretext of pending payment. The MCC has also made it clear to the company that it was ready with an alternate arrangement in the event of a strike.
When the MCC Council held its first meeting under the leadership of Mayor Bhasker Moiiy, several members complained regarding the problems arising due to the frequent strike by the workers of Antony Waste Management firm. Some members even demanded that the firm be blacklisted.
Giving details regarding waste handling, MCC Commissioner Mohammad Nazeer said as per the agreement the company apart from waste collection has also to sweep the road using a machine and clear the drains which are over one meter deep. It also has to separate the wastes. However, when it has failed in discharging some of the duties, penalty is levied and some deductions are made during the monthly bill payment. This amount has reached Rs 9 crores. The firm has also filed arbitration with the DC. He also stated that escalation bill of Rs 5.50 crore is due along with it Rs 2.25 crore towards the bill for the month of May, thus amounting to Rs 7.75 crores.
MLAs Vedavyas Kamath, Bharath Shetty, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Deputy Mayor Mohammad Kunjathbail were also present.
