GPs with population above 10,000 will be upgraded to TP: Sorake

Mangalore, Oct 19, 2014:  The urban development department will recruit 1,000 civic workers shortly, said Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake. Speaking to media  here October 18,  Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake  said the urban development department will recruit 1,000 civic workers shortl;   there are around 27,000 civic workers who are on contract basis in the State. Majority of contract civic workers undergo harassment in the hands of the contractor who do not pay them as well are denied of benefits. While recruiting the civic workers, emphasis will be given to regularise the services of those who are serving on contract basis. The proposal on the recruitment will be submitted to the government for approval.

Upgrade:  Stating that the government has already upgraded Ullal and Puttur TMC to CMC, Sorake said that the objections were invited from the public for the same. After the scrutiny of the objections, the State government will issue a notification in this regard. The existing body will be dissolved. “The gram panchayat whose population is above 10,000 will be upgraded to Town Panchayat. The State government already has 160 proposals in this regard.” Reforms

Stating that there was a need to regulate urban development authorities in Karnataka, the minister said that the government is planning to appoint an officer at the state-level to monitor the activities of the urban development authorities. The government is planning to appoint an IAS officer. “At present, though urban development authorities come directly under the ministry of urban development, we can not directly interfere in their activities. After the resolution is passed in the urban development authority, the proposal is sent to the government for approval. In fact, a committee has been constituted to look into the loopholes in urban development authorities and submit a detailed recommendations to improve the functioning of the authorities.” When asked on development of layouts by the Mangalore Urban Development Authority, the Minister said that urban development authorities have been directed to develop layouts. Instead of 60X40 sites, the authority has been directed to create 50X50 site. On misappropriation in layouts created at Chelyar, the Regional Commissioner will submit a report. The submission of report is delayed for various reasons, he said.  Many matters were talked about.
