Mangaluru, May 28, 2015:  DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim said that all preparations are in place for free and fair Gram Panchayat polls in the district, which will be held on March 29.The day has been declared as dry day and it will also be a public holiday for those who are within Gram Panchayat limits.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa said that steps have been taken for orderly and  peaceful election. There are 880 polling booths including 65 naxal-affected booths in the district. In total, 139 booths have been considered as hyper sensitive, 216 sensitive and 460 booths are normal.


  Around 2,200 police will be deployed for the election security, most of them from Mangaluru and Bengaluru. Staff from Home guards, Central Industrial Security Force, Karnataka State Reserved Police and a company from Kerala will be deployed.


Combing has been done in naxal-affected areas by ANF and there are no visible threats. However, Central Reserved Police Force will be deployed in sensitive areas.  There will be 61 sector mobiles, 10 supervisory mobiles, 15 check posts and ambulance service in the district. CCTV cameras will also be used in selected areas. 


Armed police facility will be provided in naxal-affected areas. There will be striking forces in taluk headquarters. A polling booth has been established in Banjarumale and confidence building measures among public have been undertaken, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishnuvardhan said that there are 366 polling booths of 59 Gram Panchayats in the city limits. Among them, 51 have been identified as hyper sensitive and 154 are sensitive.  The department has deployed 59 sector mobiles and CCTV cameras have been fixed in 20 booths.   There will be 94 cluster booths. Around 500 police personnel will be deployed including two KSRP platoons and 220 home guards.

The DC said that 19 poll code violation complaints have been registered until May 27 and most number of complaints were registered at Belthangady (6). Seven complaints were registered on the final day.  The three villages which were to boycott  the elections- Ananthur, Bannur and Markanja, have promised to vote. He said that out of 84 symbols, 73 symbols were selected by the candidates and there were no takers for 11 symbols. Interestingly, 1,045, highest number of candidates chose auto rickshaw as their symbol followed by finger ring (774) and coconut (604), he said.    A total number of 27 buses have been arranged for 2,694 staff appointed for the election duty. Election Observer Jyothindra and Additional Deputy Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu were present among others.
