Fresh incidents may spoil calm in Karnataka

Mangaluru, Nov 15, 2015: As per news reports,  stabbing incident on Nov 14,  Saturday marred the calm that had returned to Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts following violence over Tipu Sultan’s birthday celebrations. Unidentified bike-borne persons stabbed a youth at Chembugudde in the Ullal police limits of Dakshina Kannda district around 8.30pm. 

The youth and his friend were riding towards Konaje when the attackers stopped and stabbed the rider. The pillion rider escaped unhurt. The injured person has been rushed to the Wenlock District Hospital with multiple injuries, police said.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the Ullal limits to avoid any more untoward incidents. Police commissioner S Murugan visited the spot.   But for the incident, Dakshina Kannda was calm.

"The law-and-order situation in the district is by and large peaceful. All the five people who are in hospital after stabbings and assaults will be discharged within two days," DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim told reporters in Mangaluru, Nov 14.

Transportation and commercial activities in Mangaluru resumed amid prohibitory orders.  A bus was stoned near Ullal. Section 144 of the CrPC will remain in force in the district till 10pm on Nov 15. Sunday.

In Madikeri, home minister G Parameshwara visited the homes of DS Kuttappa, a VHP sympathizer, and Sahil Ahamed, a daily-wages worker, at Iggodlu and Koodugadde. They were killed in violence that broke out during an anti-Tipu Jayanti protest in Madikeri on November 10.

DC Ibrahim said: "Most of the accused are... being questioned in connection with the untoward incidents. All religious, political and other programmes should be held only after obtaining permission from the district administration."

He appealed to media and public to not believe rumours. "Rumours should be brought to the notice of the police control room or the district administration."

Murugan said tension prevailed at Ullal Bengre when a police team arrived there looking out for those who had stabbed a youth on Nov 13, Friday.  Seeing the cops, two youths jumped into the sea to escape. They were rescued and hospitalized.


BJP member Subramanian Swamy on Nov 14, Saturday described Tipu Sultan as a "servant of the French" and said the 18th century ruler of Mysore had no qualities for his memory to be celebrated. "His (Tipu) supporters say he fought the British, well he fought the British not as an independent entity, he fought the British as what I would say as the servant of the French," Swamy said. "Napolean had arrived in Africa. He was confident of winning the war there and he wanted to come to India, so there was an alliance made by the French and Tipu to fight the British."
