Free self-defence training to help females fight back in emergencies

Mangaluru, Sep 21, 2016:  DARE (Defence Against Rape and Eve-teasing) a free work shop has been organized at various schools and colleges in Udupi, which comprises theory and practical demonstrations on how young girls can defend themselves. Participants are trained in verbal confrontation skills, avoidance, response, survival and escape tactics and numerous self-defence methods. It is based on using the right technique at the right time depending upon the situation.


self defenceHosapete-based girls Shalini Bhandary, Savitha Naidu, Anuradha and Salma Kushal are conducting the free workshop at Udupi and Manipal. They contacted education institutes in the district to create awareness on the need of the workshop. The workshop is held for two hours with the aim to train young girls to become aware of threats, various kinds of offences and laws related to the protection of women. They teach 10 to 12 techniques from ’Jeet Kune Do’. The effectiveness of the training will be monitored by the DARE team for continuous improvement. DARE team of Baldota Group aims to create awareness at the grassroot level.

Savitha, a trainer said, that the workshop started from September 15 and will be conducted till September 24, after which mid-term exam starts for schools. Many schools from Udupi and Manipal are already being trained, which also includes government-aided school. In November, the next session will start at Mangaluru. In the 1st phase, 1000 schools and colleges will be given training and depending upon the demand of the institutions, it will be continued next year too.

In a recent circular, CBSE, New Delhi directed its schools to train girls in self defence, from class one to 10 for one week. The techniques gives knowledge, strategies and skills required to deal with any untoward situation.
