Four new degree colleges permitted in 2016-17

Mangaluru, Mar 27, 2016 :  The Academic Council meeting was chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa. The Academic Council of Mangalore University, in its meeting on Saturday, agreed to give its affiliation to four new degree colleges, starting with the academic year 2016-17.

Four new private colleges are Salihath Women’s First Grade College, Thonse in Udupi; Milagres Evening College, Mangaluru; Hill Grove College, Gonikoppa, and Misbah Women’s College, Katipalla. Although three more private managements had sought permission to open colleges, the Council rejected the affiliation as the local inquiry committees of the university had observed that the managements lacked infrastructure to conduct classes.

The number of affiliated colleges in Mangalore University will now go up to 214. The Council permitted the extension of affiliations to 25 colleges and continuation of the affiliations to 181 colleges.

New courseThe Council also gave its nod for the St Aloysius College to start Bachelor of Vocational Course in retail management, food processing and engineering and pharmaceutical chemistry and BSc with optional subjects of mathematics, statistics and economics.

The courses have already been started in the academic year 2015-16, as the UGC had awarded a Kaushal Kendra to the college. The local inquiry committee noted that the college had prepared an outline of the syllabus to run the courses.

A detailed syllabus as per the University’s structure of examination, however, also needs to be prepared. The BSc (Economics) syllabus need to be modified to make its approach more scientific and to make it different from BA (Economics).

For the establishment of a Post-graduate Department of Studies and Research in Education at Mangalore University, the Academic Council approved a draft statute governing the establishment of the PG Department and creation of posts in the Mangalore University.

Salary of guest lecturersThe Vice Chancellor, who later spoke to reporters, said that the Mangalore University is planning to give a salary up to Rs 50,000 to a qualified guest teaching faculty with PhD/-SLET/NET qualification, starting 2017-18. At present, guest faculty are paid a minimum of Rs 14,000 and maximum of Rs 28,000, depending on the work load.

Apart from this, the interested guest teaching faculty are given mini research projects of up to Rs one lakh this year. If the faculty show progress, he/she will be given another mini research project of Rs 1 lakh the following year.

This will help the University to retain the best talent. The mini research projects help the teaching faculties, in turn, to improve their research activities.DH News Service

Controlling number of PG studentsThe Academic Council members raised concern during the meeting over the increase in the intake of students for post-graduate courses in private/government colleges.

The Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa responded, saying that the guidelines – for restricting the intake of students in government and private colleges to ensure that the intake is on par with the PG departments of Mangalore University campus – will be prepared and placed for approval in the next Academic Council meeting.

The professors said that the PG courses in colleges have become an extension of UG courses.
