Four from Bantwal killed in car accident at Mudigere

Bantwal, Feb 18, 2019 : In a tragic incident, four people from Bantwal were killed in car accident at Mudigere near Chikkamagaluru on February 18, Monday.

The deceased are identified as Vishwanath Rai (65) his wife Pushpa (60), Vishwanath’s brother Raghava Rai (62) and his wife Mamatha (53). Vishwanath and his brother Raghava both served in defence forces and were residing in Bantwal and Puttur respectively.

Sanjiv Rai (71) has miraculously escaped with injuries and hospitalized. He has been shifted to Mangaluru hospital for better medical care.

Reports said that a total of five people were traveling in the car when the tragedy happened near Malleshana Gudde estate, some 35 kilometers away from Kalasa town. They were on their way to Balehole from Bantwal when the tragedy occurred around 2.30 pm. Their car fell into 60-feet deep gorge resulting in their deaths.

As Vishwanatha Rai was at the wheel he might have lost control while passing through Malleshana Gudde estate circle. The car they were travelling fell into the gorge leading to the tragedy. The residents nearby rushed to their rescue and shifted Sanjiv to the hospital.


Police claimed the families took a shortcut route from Hirebyle to reach the destination early and ended up in losing their lives. This route was hardly used by the travelers, an officer claimed. Kalasa police have registered the case.
