Mangalore, Jan 18: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada called upon the MRPL to achieve the objective of corporate responsibility not by giving favours but by creating permanent facilities in healthcare, education and public utility.

Speaking at a programme organised to mark the foundation stone laying ceremony of the III phase of the project of Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited on Monday, he said MRPL should go for building concrete structures like hospitals, schools which will be remembered for the generations to come along with the distribution of scholarships for the students, sewing machines and other help to the community.

He said “elected representatives should be taken into confidence by the MRPL and selection of beneficiaries for various projects must be transparent, so that no one will raise finger at MRPL questioning the selection.”

Prasada said: “MRPL should take all necessary steps to make it safe for the people who work and for the families who reside in the surroundings of the unit. Latest technologies must be introduced for making the unit absolutely safe for the people.”

He said the area where III unit of Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited  is coming up should be covered with the greenery as that surrounding areas are not affected.

He said “pipelines should be laid for the supply of gas from HPCL. The parking of trucks on either side of the road creates lot of inconvenience to the people. Roads are in deplorable condition. There is a need to provide better transportation.”

However, to a query on pilferage in pipeline, he said we will ensure stringent measures are taken to avoid such incidents.

To another query on leakage from MRPL polluting the neighbouring wells in the vicinity, Minister said “if there was any leackage, then it will be looked into at the earliest.”
