Food aggregator delivery boys to face speed restrictions

Mangaluru, Aug 24, 2019: In the light of complaints about rash-riding by delivery boys of online food aggregators in the city, the police are planning to restrict the speed of their two-wheelers.
Following a complaint during the weekly phone-in programme here on Friday, Police Commissioner P.S. Harsha said that it has been proposed to restrict the speed limit to 40 kmph for them. “We will call a meeting of these riders and also the technical heads of these aggregators before finalsing the proposal.”
All these vehicles are fitted with Global Positioning System devices and aggregators maintain log books on each rider. “We will discuss their issues and pass orders to restrict their speed limit. If anyone violated the rules, necessary action will be taken,” he said.
Mr. Harsha proposed similar action on ready-mix concrete vehicles, which were accused of parking on the road and obstructing traffic. “We will call a meeting of these operators shortly and issue necessary guidelines. They cannot be allowed to operate their machines while blocking the way for other motorists,” he said.
Mr. Harsha said orders will be issued to bar loading and unloading of material of goods vehicles between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. To a complaint by a senior citizen, Mr. Harsha said the city bus operators will be asked to comply with the norm of reserving seats for women and senior citizens. The city bus operators will be asked to ensure that all commuters were issued tickets.
A resident of Pachhanady said with the availability of few private buses, commuters are forced to hire autorickshaws to reach Bondel. A woman from Shakthinagar complained against an autorickshaw driver collecting 1.5 times the meter in the day. A resident of Nandigudde sought the repair of a worn-out road hump near Nandigudde Circle, while another resident from Kapikad sought the pruning of trees on Bejai Kapikad Road.
Unified phone-in programme
Mr. Harsha on Friday proposed holding a weekly phone-in programme that will be attended by representatives of all public agencies including the city police, district administration, zilla panchayat and Mangaluru City Corporation. He said that apart from grievances related to the police, the city police are receiving grievances related to other agencies during their weekly phone-in programme. “A unified phone-in programme will help in effectively addressing grievances,” he said.
Presently, the police have been forwarding grievances to the agencies. “But it takes a long time to reach the concerned and the problem will remains unaddressed,” he said, and added that he would write a letter to Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. in this regard.
