Mangaluru, May 16, 2015: :Large number of enthusiasts actively participated in a fishing fair in the river near Pavanje Bridge on May 15, Friday. The event is organised as part of the culmination of the famous Khandevu Nemotsava.
The Fair which commenced at sun rise in the presence of several people, both young and old from far and near. Significantly, people cutting across all barriers of caste, creed and religion take part in this unique event. Moreover there is also a belief that river fish was tasty as well as good for health and many who sell fish during the fair make hay while the sun shines. Many others purchase fish, regardless of the price owing to another belief that Khandevu fish would do good to them.
Beyond doubt this unique fishing fair gave a good opportunity to the people to enjoy fishing and to catch a glimpse of the rich tradition of Tulunad.
One of the participants, a banker officer said he has been a regular visitor to the fishing fair since 35 years. Recalling the fishing fair in the past, he said then the visitors used to be offered jaggery and water as a refreshment. “We used to arrive here the previous night, stay in the hills and then take part in the fair the next day,” he recalled.
Many were also seen participating and enjoying the fishing fair with their entire families.
