Fishing come to standstill in DK, Udupi; thousands of fishermen take to streets in Malpe

Mangaluru, Jan 6, 2018: Thousands of fishermen are observing a protest across Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on January 6, Sunday to pressurise the government to trace the   fishing boat with seven  fishermen on board  who are missing since the past 22 days. No fishing boat has ventured into the sea  today.

In Malpe thousands of fishermen took out a  protest march  from Malpe to Ambalpady bye-pass where they resorted to a Rasta Roko agitation.  Traffic on the National Highway was affected for nearly three hours  due to the protest.

Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje, local MLA Raghupathi Bhat, former MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, former MP Jayaprakash Hegde and other leaders also took part in the protest.

Several fishermen from Mangaluru too had travelled to Malpe to take part in the protest.

The Fishing boat named Suvarna Tribhuja which ventured into fishing off Malpe coast on December 13 is missing.  Though a massive search operation has been launched there is no clue as to where the boat and the fishermen are at present.
