Fishermen air woes at awareness event

Udupi, Mar 11, 2015: Fishermen aired  their may problems at the interactive meet held during the awareness programme on ‘Uses of Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ)’ organised by the College of Fisheries and Department of Fisheries at Malpe, recently. Kumar Naik, Co-Principal Investigator at the College said PFA Advisory services provided by the Indian National Centre of Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) was a promising tool for the fishermen as it helped them in precision fishing.   PFA helped locate fishing grounds, reduced search time from 30 per cent to 70 per cent, helped in saving fuel and manpower, he said.  

Fishermen_A fisherman, said there was no equipment on board for the data being monitored in Malpe harbour. He said it would be better if the information was supplied to the mobile phones of fishermen.  Another fisherman said there was a decline in fish production in Malpe, because of which fewer boats go out  to sea now.

M. Shivakumar, Co-Principal Investigator from the College, said he would pass on the information about the problems faced by the fishermen to the government.
