Farmers’ associations demand complete ban on Endosulphan

Mangalore, May 17: The Savayava Krishi Parivara and the Bharatiya Kisan Sangha (BSK) jointly organized a protest meet in front of the DC’s office on May 17, Tuesday, during which they urged the centre to ban the manufacture and sale of Endosulphan in India.

 

 

 

 

 

 

In his protest address, BSK State General Secretary B. K. Ramesh said that the Sangha will continue protesting in spite of the latest Supreme Court order banning the manufacture, sale, and use of Endosulphan across India for 8 weeks. Stressing that farmers’ organizations want a complete ban to be imposed on the manufacture and sale of the pesticide all over India, he said that India has not taken the initiative to ban a deadly pesticide that has already been banned in more than 84 countries all over the globe.

The protestors also demanded a special squad to be formed to ensure that Endosulphan is not introduced into the market under different names, quick payment of compensations to victims of Endosulphan, scanning of pregnant women at government hospitals to ensure that the ill effects of the pesticide is not transferred to the next generation, dissemination of proper information regarding Endosulphan on all forms of media such as newspapers, hoardings, TV, and so on, recognition and rewards for farmers adopting organic farming techniques, and so on.
Sunder Rao of BKS alleged that a conspiracy such as the 2G scam is responsible for the central government’s decision of requesting 11 years to ban Endosulphan worldwide at the Stockholm Convention in Geneva.

C. H. Narayan Bhat, the district president of the Kisan Sangha, Sharavathi Narayan, A. P. Sadashiv, and many others were also present.
