Shirva, July 16, 2017: Shirva police who are investigating into the case of mass suicide of four members of a family of a jeweller near Padubelle-Pambur on Thursday, have suspected a financial problem as the reason for the incident. Meanwhile, in another revelation, it has been gathered that Acharya had pledged fake gold worth nearly Rs 60 lakhs at the Padubelle branch of Innanje Co-operative Bank.
The gold pledged by the jeweller was found to be fake only after the bank authorities examined the same after the suicide of the jeweller.
Based on the evidences gathered by the police, the Jeweller Shanker Acharya who had ended his life with his wife and two daughters, had a huge debt. With the impending wedding of his daughter, Acharya was worried over arranging funds and this is suspected to be the reason behind the drastic step.
He is learnt to have mixed cyanide in the Theertha Prasada in the morning and offered the same to his unknowing wife and daughters and had later consumed the same.
Police have gathered the mobile call details of Acharya and it has been found that he had sought loan from at least four to five persons who had assured of the same at the time of his daughter’s wedding. It is said he had even availed loan to pay his daughter’s college fee. The fear that he may face insult if he was unable to arrange funds for his daughter’s wedding reportedly drove the jeweller to the extreme step.
Police have seized the house as well as jewellery shop of Shanker Acharya and are scrutinizing various documents.
