Establish garment factories to provide alternate jobs to distressed beedi workers : Ivan

Mangaluru Apr 27, 2016: MLC Ivan D’Souza has demanded establishment of  garment factories as an alternative to provide jobs for beedi workers   who are hit hard  due to the new rule of depicting 85% of pictorial warning message in Beedi packets.

 Addressing  the media at Congress office on April 27, Wednesday, he said that nearly 95% women in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are dependent on beedi works. He further said that the  government has failed to implement proper labor laws in the state due to which the labourers feel insecure in their workplace. Union Government has implemented several schemes for the labourers but the age group eligibility is from 18 to 40 years. This criteria has  hit hard the labourers in the age group of above 40, he said and stressed the need to strengthen labour laws.

 Dakshina Kannada District Worker’s Department will celebrate Workers’ Day on May 1 at Ravindra Kala Mantapa in Mangalore University College. District in-charge Minister Ramanath Rai will inaugurate the functio., Health Minister UT Khader, Minister for Youth Services  Abhaya Chandra Jain and MLC  Ivan D’Souza will be the chief guests on the occasion.
