Enthusiasm runs high to witness ‘diamond ring’ solar eclipse, December 26

Mangaluru, Dec 24, 2019:  Amateur Astronomers association Mangaluru, along with Padua Educational Institutions has organised a historic session to watch and witness to ’The Great India Solar eclipse on December 26, Thursday, 8 to 11 AM at Padua College Grounds. Training on solar eclipse Dec 24, today :  Bharatha Jnana Vijnana Samithi will organise a training session for high school teachers on witnessing the solar eclipse at the block education office in Bantwal on December 24, Tuesday today. Bharatha Jnana Vijnana Samithi Dakshina Kannada district committee organiser Vasudeva Ucchila will be the resource person for the session.  The training is aimed at warding off superstitious belief on solar eclipse.

Arrangements in Udupi :

Udupi : Arrangements have been made at Poornaprajna College for people to witness the ‘diamond ring’ during the solar eclipse between 8 am and 11 am on December 26.  Students and people can participate in large numbers to witness the celestial event, Poornaprajna College retired professor Dr A P Bhat stated.

“Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha and ISRO scientist B K Niveditha will take part. ISRO retired scientist Prof P J Bhat will talk on Indian space science achievement. Science models prepared by college students will also be exhibited on the occasion,” said Dr Bhat.
He also said that five telescopes have been arranged for witnessing solar eclipse. A screen will be put up to display the celestial event, he added.

Pinhole projectors :  Divya Vasanth of the Poornaprajna Amateur Astronomers’ Club (PAAC) said that the Club has been creating awareness on solar eclipse to ward off misconceptions on the eclipse. The PAAC has visited at least 1,000 schools to motivate schoolchildren and teachers to witness the eclipse. It has also conducted training programme on the solar eclipse for teachers and students. The teams visited schools and presented them with a pinhole projector to witness the solar eclipse.
