Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that the official class, who attain power through reservations, should strive for the welfare of downtrodden and should see to it that the facilities by the government reach the needy.

Devarj Urs became a successful administrator even without subscribing to any kind of isms. Having understood the true requirements of  governance, his ideas were practical.

His focus was to elevate the lives of people and thus he implemented the Land Reforms Act. He believed that reservation was necessary in political system. As a result of his thought, reservations were introduced right from Gram Panchayat level and many leaders emerged in the political field making use of it, the DC said.

He meanwhile suggested Mangalore City Corporation to name any road or Hall in Mangalore after Devaraj Urs.

Delivering a special lecture on the occasion, University College (Mangalore) Kannada department Associate Professor Prof Nagappa Gowda said that Devaraj Urs stood for the service of people.

He banned many inhumane practices like manual scavenging and bonded labour in the State. His statesmanship was unquestionable. Urs gave priorities to republican values. Also, he declared Kannada as the administrative language in the state, Gowda added.

MLC Ivan D’Souza said that there are very few political leaders who enable the people to attain self respect and Devraj Urs was one among such leaders. He wanted even the last person of the society to be self reliant. He brought out several reformative measures amidst oppositions. His ideologies should not be confined to speeches but should be implemented in government programmes, Ivan said.

Zilla Panchayat President Asha Thimmappa Gowda said that the government departments should take up and complete the programmes meant for backward classes on time, to make the benefits completely available to the needy.  Health Minister U T Khader and MCC Mayor Mahabala Marla also spoke. Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo presided over the programme.
