Endosulfan victims bring joy to DK in SSLC results, overall dist gets fourth place

Mangaluru/Uppinangady, May 08, 2018: Dakshina Kannada sees two endosulfan victims get flying colours in  SSLC exams.  One student is from Perabe and another from Kunthoor in Puttur taluk.

Speaking to media DDPI Shivaramaiah said, “When student writes the exam privately, they have to come to district headqurters to write the exam. However, the department took special permission from the authorities concerned and allotted examination centre near the house of these two children. This has prevented them from travelling all the way to district headquarter for writing the exam.”

Abhishek (23) from Perabe has scored 463 marks in SSLC. His legs are crippled and not in a position to walk and write. He has scored 91 in Hindi, 90 in Kannada, 89 in Social Science, 88 in English, 54 in Science and 51 in Mathematics.  He is the son of Gangarathna and Vasanth of Agathadi in Perabe. He is also the student of Endosulfan Victims Day Care Centre, at Koila.

Abhishek wrote the exam with the help of a scribe, as he cannot write in hand due to the deformity. He used to read at home, as well as at Day Care Centre. Abhishek said he could excel with the guidance of Kalladka Higher Primary School teacher Sowmyalatha and Day Care Centre teacher Shashikala.  Gangarathna, mother of Abhishek said, “He has been interested in studies. With the support of the Day Care Centre, he could appear for the exam.”

Another endosulfan victim Tulasi has secured 66% marks in SSLC examinations. She is the daughter of Yashoda and Narayana Naik and hails from Kokkada in Belthangady. She is the member of Kokkada Endosulfan Day Care Centre. She has scored 84 in Kannada, 59 in Mathematics, 45 in Science and 74 in Social Science. She has been exempted from writing English and Hindi subjects.

Other achievers  :  In another case, an SSLC student, who was a victim of a sexual assault, has passed the exam in the district.  The minor was able to continue her studies with the support of the district administration, Education Department and CWC.

A student who had undergone chemotherapy too, excelled by scoring 88% marks in the SSLC exam. The department of public instruction had made special arrangement for the student to write the exam in one of the centre in Mangaluru.


Dakshina Kannada in  4th place : 


Though an increase in the district’s SSLC pass percentage is seen  at 85.56, Dakshina Kannada has slipped to fourth position in 2017-18, from second position in 2016-17, when it had got a pass percentage of 82.39.  A total of 28,068 students appeared for the exam with 13,997 boys and 14,071 girls, 24,014 have passed the exam.

Top scorers   Pranshula Prashanth of Alva’s English Medium School has scored 624 marks and stands second in the state. She is also the district topper with 125 in Sanskrit, 100 each in Kannada, English, Social Science and Science and 99 in Mathematics.

Pranshula said, “I did not take any tuition and revised my lessons on a daily basis. When the exams were nearing, the teachers held special classes in the school and gave special training in solving the problems.”

Further, she said Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva would call her and instill confidence in her, which also motivated her to excel. “I want to pursue PCMB in PU,” she said.

Pranshula is the daughter   of Prashanth Kumar and Chethana Prashanth.

Abhijna Rao of Kumaraswamy High School, Subrahmanya, has scored 623 marks, and is ranked third in the state.    She scored 99 in Kannada and Mathematics and full marks in the other subjects. She is the daughter of late Vittal Rao.

100% results  :  A total of 66 schools in the district have secured 100% results including 10 are government schools and three aided schools.

Mahesh High School has registered 100% result in SSLC. The school toppers are Vaishnavi Chatram, Ashwij B R, Harshith Bekal and   Rakshath G.

Adyanadka Janata English Medium School also secured cent per cent results. Aniruddh is topper in the school with 597 marks. Alike Satya Sai Lokaseva High School has also secured 100%. Naveen Kumar M has scored 616, Nishchay B K (615) and Shibi K R (614).

The DDPI said that with the efforts of Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr M R Ravi, video conference with the SSLC students were held to help them cope with examination fear and guide them to score well with the help of State Institute for Rural Development (SIRD).

Under this programme, subject experts from the district interacted with students by calling them to the respective taluk panchayats where the conference facility was made available. This has benefited students across the state as well. Further, subject-wise mentoring of students who have been failing to score above 40 marks was also initiated.

Supplementary exams from June 21

The supplementary examinations will be conducted between June 21 and 28. This year, students can apply online for revaluation and scanned copies of their answer scripts from May 9. Payment can also be made online. For more information, students may visit www.kseeb.kar.nic.in
