Elderly woman rescued from one-year confinement

Shivamogga, July 15, 2015: An unmarried elderly woman, who had been allegedly kept in confinement by her younger sister, was on Tuesday rescued and admitted to a hospital for treatment by the officials of the Department of Women and Child Welfare here.

B.L. Srinivas, an autorickshaw driver, had lodged a complaint with the Vinobha Nagar police station here that his 63-year-old elder sister, Padma, a retired nurse, had been kept in confinement by his another sister Lalithamma for the past one year.

In the complaint, Mr. Srinivas had alleged that Ms. Padma was forced to dispose of her property to Ms. Lalithamma through a will. The victim was getting a sum of Rs 15,000 a month as pension, which was also being used by Ms. Lalithamma, he stated in the complaint.

Action taken

Based on the complaint, the police, along with Women Protection Officer Ganga Bai, visited the victim’s house on Tuesday. When they reached the spot, the house was found locked. When they entered the house after breaking open the lock, Ms. Padma was found lying on the floor in a very unhygienic condition.

Ms. Lalithamma claimed that food was being provided to Ms. Padma for two times a day. Ms. Padma was suffering from diabetes and she had developed gangrene on her feet. Ms. Lalithamma said that an Ayurved practitioner was treating her elder sister.

Ms. Bai later told presspersons, the victim was suffering from acute health problems and the place she was living was very unhygienic. As the victim was suffering from diabetes and gangrene, it was necessary to provide her with proper medical treatment. The victim was later admitted to the Centre for Women Care, established by the Department of Health and Family Welfare at Government McGann Hospital here for treatment.
