Education dept. told not to send students to private functions

Mangaluru, Jan 10, 2017: Deputy Commissioner K.G. Jagadeesha on Monday directed the Education Department to instruct schools not to send children to any private functions or programmes.

Presiding over a grievance redressal meeting of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes here, Mr. Jagadeesha said that no students should be taken to private programmes from schools.

Dalit leaders brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner that recently Dalit students of a government school in Sullia taluk were subjected to untouchability when one of the teachers had taken them to a house-warming ceremony. The Deputy Director of Public Instructions told the meeting that the teacher concerned has been suspended and a case registered with the jurisdictional police.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jagadeesha directed the officials concerned to ensure that Manna land, meant for people belonging to SCs and STs, is not encroached upon in any part of the district. He asked Revenue officials to clearly demarcate such land and take steps to protect them from encroachment.

He also asked officials to complete the process of Akrama-Sakrama for SCs and STs applicants. Steps should be taken to ensure that shop premises reserved for these categories in buildings constructed by local bodies are allotted to eligible persons and if any unauthorised person is doing the business, such person should immediately be evicted, he said.

Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary N.R. Umesh, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police Vedamurthy, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Renuka Prasad and District Social Welfare Officer Santosh Kumar and others were present.
