While the Mangalore diocesan Bishop Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza celebrated the Vigil Mass at Rosario Cathedral, Udupi Bishop Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo celebrated the Vigil Mass at Mother of Sorrows Church in Udupi.

The celebrations started with the Easter Vigil at the grounds of respective churches. The fire is blessed by the priests, from which the Paschal candle was lit and it was carried inside the respective churches, with the faithful holding lit candles signifying the new light for the world. It was followed by the chanting the Exsultet, also called the “Easter Proclamation”. It was followed by the readings from Old Testament as well as the New Testament.

Besides blessing the fire, the priests also bless the water, the  holy water is used for all rituals in respective churches throught the year.

Christians are called upon in a special way to renew the Baptismal Vows following which the priests sprinkle newly blessed Holy Water on the congregation.   Though most of the churches were celebrating Easter mass at midnight earlier, hardly a few celebrate the same at midnight since a decade.

A few churches had organised entertainment programmes soon after the mass for the parishioners.

Today, April 1, Sunday is the chief feast of the catholic Church - EASTER.  There will be mass, prayers and celebrations all through the day and will continue during the Easter week in a special manner.

’Mangalore Today’, takes this opportunity to convey the Good Wishes on this special occasion.
