Drug peddling prevention - Udupi SP seeks students’ involvement

Udupi, Oct 1, 2014:  Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Students contribution to an addiction-free society,’ at NSAM First Grade College Nitte,  Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad said the information tipped to the police over the drug peddlers in college premises would help stop the youth falling prey to the menace of drug addiction.

ududpiThe SP said that nearly 56 per cent of the total populace in India constitute youth and it was disturbing  to observe that a large number of youth are victims of the drug abuse.

They are becoming the victims of alien cultures as well as the peer pressure. He stressed that the society should join hands with the policing system to tackle the issue. He called upon the youth not to succumb to false attractions and  bad habits. The SP said the dealers and possessors of the drugs would be punished under stringent ’Anti Drug Abuse Act, 1995’. The capital punishment can also be pronounced following the severity of the crime and upto 20 years imprisonment can be sentenced. Every year, nearly 1.20 lakh unnatural deaths are reported in the country, of which 50 per cent are youth and majority among those cases are related to the addiction of various forms.  He said the people who get addicted also commit suicide and indulge in criminal activities often.

The SP said that a healthy society is possible only with an addiction-free atmosphere. The students should also be familiar with punishment and legal process involved in the drunk drive cases so as to understand caution.
