Drive against illegal boards on vehicles:Udupi SP

Udupi, July 07, 2018: Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbargi said that the Police Department is successfully conducting drives on various violations and a week-long drive will be held against the illegal boards on the vehicles other than of the authorised persons, tinted glasses, and seat belts respectively.


Lakshman NimbSpeaking to media persons here at the phone in programme, he said that last drive was on shrill horns and Matka.

Nimbargi said that during the last drive, Rs 1,79,500 fine was collected. As many as 53 cases of shrill horns of bullet Enfield bikes, 92 cases of other two wheelers and 251 cases of shrill horns of four-wheelers were registered. Apart from this, 165 cases for sound making vehicles and 492 cases for the drivers and other staffs in the vehicles not wearing the uniforms were also registered.

He added that 16 mechanics who are fitting shrill horns and 40 mechanics who are fitting silencers were called and warned about the consequences.

July month will be observed as Traffic Management and Road Safety Month wherein the police personnel will visit schools and colleges to create awareness in this regard. Various types of competitions will be held for the students, he added.

After the previous phone in-programme on June 15, 36 Matka cases were registered and 38 were arrested. Seven gambling cases were registered and 39 people were arrested. Three were arrested in three illegal liquor sale cases. One is arrested in one NDPT case. As many as 107 cases are registered under COTPA, 74 for drunken driving, 923 for shrill horns, 33 cases for using mobile while riding/driving, 2,245 for riding without helmets, 75 cases for over speed and 4,056 cases for other crimes under Motor Vehicle Act, he gave details.

The SP said that measures are being taken to introduce a controlling unit by setting up CCTV cameras in all the police stations. The functioning and the ongoing activities in each police station will be live in the separate control room set up exclusively at the SP office in each district. The plans are executed at the state level and are in the initial phase, Nimbargi said while referring to an appeal by a senior citizen demanding for the introduction of CCTV cameras in all police stations to lessen the corruption and other unethical activities.

The SP received 16 calls, which included the complaints against illegal liquor sale, unscientific parking, and violations of traffic rules among others. To a query, Nimbargi said that the night beats have been increased to ensure the safety in the district.

On the query over parking mess in and around KMC hospital and emergency ward, he said the issue will be cleared very soon.

There was a complaint about a big pond created after digging the mud for a school playground at Belapu. The caller expressed concern about the possible danger as the pond which is filled with water and school children play there.

There was also a problem pertaining to the deep potholes on the national highway connecting Manipal and Kadiyali. A complainant complained over rash and negligent driving of the city bus drivers in the city bus stop area.
