Dozens of people become homeless in flash floods

Mangalore, August 30, 2012 : A large number of people lost their homes in DK, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada in flash floods caused by heavy rains.

 


udupiAgricultural farms, plantations, and roads were flooded when the retention wall of Haleri vented dam collapsed because of heavy rain in Badaga Mijaru, Moodubidri. The retention wall was hit by a heavy log that had come floating in the rain water, as a result of which it developed cracks and collapsed.

Communication between Todaru and Koppadakumeru was rendered impossible because of the floods, and nearly 100 families were in distress. Ponds, lakes, rivers, and other water bodies are full and overflowing because of continuous rainfall in the past few days.

Several houses and a government school were destroyed in the rains. DK recorded an average rainfall of 79.8mm, Belthangady recorded the highest rainfall of 144.6mm, and Udupi recorded rainfall of 140mm during the last 24-hour period.
