Double murder - undertrials shifted from Mangaluru jail to central prisons

Mangaluru, Nov 06, 2015: In a serious Crackdown on department of prison following the murder of two undertrials at Mangaluru which continued for the third day with the ’transfer’ of 16 notorious undertrials from the district jail here to five different central prisons. Determined to keep a check on the activities in the jail, four undertrials were shifted to Ballari central prison, equal number to Belagavi, three each to Dharwad and Mysuru and two have been sent to Kalaburagi.

City police chief S Murugan told media that the prisons department has resorted to this course of action over reports that they were likely to create disturbance in the M’luru district jail. They have been shifted to the respective central jails under due police escort, Murugan said. The action of shifting the under trials with a history of creating trouble was in the offing and was done without a hitch. 

On the ongoing investigation in to the murder of Madoor Isubu and his lieutenant Ganesh Shetty, Murugan said the lower courts have imposed certain conditions on the police with regards to the five accused that is not amiable to the investigations. We will appeal before the same court for relaxation of the conditions imposed, he said adding if the court does not change its stand, the city police will go in for an appeal to get custody of the accused.

Police has also sent the sharp edged weapons reportedly used by the five assailants for the murder for forensic examination. A  thorough search of the district jail carried out by city police and prisons department had yielded 16 mobile phones, six kitchen knives, seven sim cards, seven memory cards, mobile charges, electric wires, cutting player, packets of chilli powder, electric stove and wires of electric iron as reported.

Sadashiva, father of Akash Bhavan Sharan whose henchmen allegedly carried out the killings of Isubu and Ganesh, in a related development has written to chief justice of Karnataka high court praying for the safety of his son. Sadashiva said he perceived threat to life of Sharan, presently lodged in Shivamogga jail. Claiming that Sharan has been falsely implicated in the murders, he said there are chances of police finishing him off in an ’encounter’.
