Domestic violence cases in DK proliferate

Mangaluru, Apr 24, 2016:Chairing a meeting the DK DC  Adoor B Ibrahim directed officials to submit a proposal to district legal assistance cell to provide assistance to 133 cases out of 277 cases of domestic violence in the district. The meeting convened to review the progress in the implementation of various acts such as Prevention of Atrocities against Women and Children, ’Sthairya Nidhi’ Scheme and other programmes.  An official said 92 such cases have been settled through counselling and ten by courts.

The Women and Child Department officer said under the scheme, a financial assistance of Rs 4.60 lakh has been provided to 20 rape victims. These cases were filed between July 2015 and March 2016. A special treatment unit for women and children and counseling for women who have been subjected to atrocity, medical treatment, legal assistance and rehabilitation has been set up at Lady Goschen Hospital from November 2014, he added.

Women and Child Protection district unit officer Usman said a total of 123 cases have been registered in 2015-16. They include, 23 domestic violence, 21 rape, 41 sexual assault cases, one case on women trafficking, four cases of sexual assault on children, 14 missing cases and 19 other cases.

Legal assistance has been provided to 669 people and medical assistance has been provided to 108 women. Police assistance has been provided to nine women and rehabilitation is provided to six people. Psycho-social support has been provided to 90 people. CEO Srividya and District Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Ganesh also attended.
