According to the Ullal police, Bhavunni had been admitted to the hospital, with a complaint of pain in the chest and legs, on Monday afternoon.  He died due to a cardiac arrest at 11.45 p.m. in the intensive care unit.   Soon after the death, a group of 40 persons allegedly barged into the ICU unit and assaulted Assistant Professor of Yenepoya Medical College Abhijit Sudhakar Shetty and tore his T-shirt accusing him of medical negligence.

Two postgraduate students and a staff nurse, Florence, who tried to intervene, were also assaulted.  The group reportedly abducted Dr. Shetty and abandoned him near the Ullal police station.

The doctor complained that he was continuously kicked, beaten, assaulted and abused. The doctor was then forced into a vehicle that was parked in front of the hospital building, before being forcibly driven away.  Police, who learnt of the incident, chased the vehicle and managed to stop it when it reached Netravati bridge near Thokkottu. Sensing the situation, the abductors drove the vehicle towards Ullal police vehicle. Police waylaid the vehicle and managed to rescue the doctor.

Meanwhile, Iliyaz, one of the sons of the deceased, has filed a counter complaint on medical negligence.

The Ullal police registered a case and arrested three persons who were part of the group.

Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar said that the police were also looking into the complaint by Bhavunni’s family members accusing the hospital staff of negligence leading to the death of Bhavunni.
