Mangalore, Jul 7, 2013: Deputy Commissioner N Prakash has said that a letter has been written to the state government seeking immediate sanction of Rs 5 crore under Natural Calamity Relief Fund in view of the extensive loss of property as well as a few lives in the recent floods that affected Dakshina Kannada district.
He was addressing a meeting held at the Netravathi Auditorium of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat on July 6, Saturday to discuss the remedial measures taken by the administration in view of heavy rains and floods.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel who presided over the meeting, drew the attention of the authorities towards the fact that people of the affected areas faced problems due to non-availability of boats at some places. He also took strong exception to the act of releasing water from some dams even when there was flood situation.
He said a proposal has been put forth to procure two boats at a cost of Rs 10 lakhs each to shift affected people to safer places at times of floods.
Taluk executive officers of the respective taluks furnished information on the flood damages in their respective taluks.
ZP Chief Koragappa Naik, Vice President Rithesh Shetty and others were present.
