District Administration initiates steps to set up sea water desalination plant

Mangaluru May 25, 2016: Following the acute water crisis that  hit the district in the  past few weeks, the  district administration has now  taken up the initiative to desalinate sea water for industrial purpose.

In a meeting held at DC office on May 25 Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim said that it would be easy to provide drinking water to the city if the sea water is desalinated for industrial use. Here it is worth mentioning that many industries had to shut down operations following the recent water scarcity.

Shridhar, Representative  of Ion Exchange India Limited which has proposed to start its  plant in Dakshina Kannada, said it would take 8 to 10 months to construct a plant. The cost of setting up of a plant depends upon the amount of water to be desalinated and the average cost will be Rs. 40 per every 1000 litres, he added.

He also said that there is requirement of land in accordance to the  quantity of water to be desalinated per day.

DC AB Ibrahim said that, nearly two acres of land can be provided by the  district administration

ADC Kumar, Police Commissioner M Chandrashekar, SP Bhushan Gulabrao Borase and officials of MRPL and NMPT were present.
