Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Jul 14, 2017 : Minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs U T Khader said the department will start dispatching new ration cards within a month.

ut khader 15 jul 17He said that the department will complete the process of document verification soon and it will be able to commence the printing of new ration cards within 15 days. As per the simplified document verification process, applicants need not furnish electricity bills, details of house and vehicles. Village assistants will verify only the Aadhaar numbers, family tree and the annual income of applicants while clearing the applications. Later, the department will scrutinize these documents after issuing BPL cards to applicants, Khader said.

As many as 14.70 lakh persons have applied for ration cards online of which 90% are genuine and they deserve to get the benefits of government schemes. The department should not deprive 90% of the BPL families of their benefits because of 10% fake applicants. Hence, the government has decided to print and issue ration cards to all applicants and take action against the fake ones in the later stage, Khader said.

The department has forwarded the soft copies of applications with details to the revenue department and thereafter the same have been forwarded to Janasnehi centres of respective villages. Village assistants will have to check the Aadhaar card details, the family tree of the applicant and the annual income, which is limited to Rs 1.20 lakh, he said adding that a village assistant may have to verify an average of 150 applications.

He said the department could not process the application for the last three months due to a confusion with regard to verification process. Initially, the department was planning to get the the verification done by revenue department. However, due to technical reasons, the responsibility has been handed over to the village assistants, he added.

Talking about the online ration card application process, Khader said that no other state has successfully implemented it like Karnataka.
